Miliband recovers after successful nose operation

Labor leader Ed Miliband has undergone a successful nose operation to treat sleep apnea, a condition that interrupts breathing during sleep, his office said on Wednesday.

It was carried out in central London on Wednesday to correct a deviated septum in a bid to alleviate the respiratory condition, which interrupts sleep because air is prevented from getting into the lungs.

Some newspapers have speculated that Miliband, 41, who is widely regarded to have failed to make a significant political impact since his election as leader last September, was having the operation to make his voice sound less nasal but Miliband has dismissed such claims.

He told in May that he hoped the operation would not change the sound of his voice and added, "I'm having this done for medical reasons, because I suffer from sleep apnea."

A spokeswoman for Miliband said the operation had been successful and that Miliband is now resting before going on holiday with his family in a few days.
